Read The Star by Marianne Curley (Echo 5, Short Stories, page 27) Before you start reading go through the words on page 145.
Try to answer the questions on page 36 (write them down and compare with the key online)


Also, try to explain the words & phrases on page 37 in English. write your explanations down.

Also, read the text about Genres (page 38) and answer the three questions.

On Thursday, with help from your key words, give a summary of the event to your friends.
Answer the questions: what (has happened), when, why and where. Give your personal view regarding this issue.

Prepare two questions for your friends. Your questions should
a) check their understanding of your piece of news (what you just told them about)

When you listen to someone else you should either agree OR disagree to their opinion and explain why you think the way you do.

HARPER'S DAD IS getting a divorce from her beloved stepmother, Jane. Even worse, Harper has lost her stepsister, Tess; the divorce divides them. Harper decides to escape by joining a volunteer program to build a house for a family in Tennessee who lost their home in a tornado. Not that she knows a thing about construction.

Discussion questions Muriel's wedding:

1. How would you describe Muriel as a person? Muriel's family?  Rhonda?
2. What is Muriel's number one aim in life?
3. Why do you think Muriel wanted to be called Mariel instead?
4. Why do think Muriel so desperately wanted to get married?
5. What became a turning point for Muriel? When in the story did she "wake up" and what did she realise then?
6. Compare the Muriel we see in the beginning of the film with the one in the end of the film.
7. And do the same with the clique from Porpoise Spit (see question 6).  
8. Bill Heslop´s slogan when he ran for state government was "You can't stop progress". Why is this slogan somewhat ironic?

Today I am in Borlänge on a conference. I would like you to sit down in the library OR Green room and read the first short story in your book: Zelda (page 5). Remember that you can also listen to the text (open the first page in the book and log in on your computer and follow the instructions...look for "Zelda" Audio file.

Listen/read "Zelda" and try to answer the questions: "What happened?" on page 12. Discuss with a friend, write key words. When I see you next Thursday I will ask you the questions and hope to get answers. Remember that you also have difficult words translated on page 144.
